How It Works

The games currently run through an x86-to-ARM translation layer, using community-developed Mesa Turnip Vulkan drivers to translate DirectX calls into something the Adreno 845 GPU can process. This is not native DirectX support — it is emulation with a translation stack. But according to Geekerwan, Qualcomm staff confirmed the company has begun developing its own optimized Adreno drivers for this use case, which would improve compatibility and performance significantly.

Qualcomm's latest stock Adreno drivers already include key Vulkan extensions that were previously only available in community Turnip drivers. That is widely seen as a stepping stone toward broader PC game compatibility on Android.

What This Could Mean

If Qualcomm ships official DirectX 12 translation support, it would lower the barrier for running PC games on Android devices dramatically. Right now, the process requires technical knowledge and community-built driver stacks. Official support would make it closer to plug-and-play — though performance would still depend heavily on the game and the chip.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, announced September 22, is built on a 2nm process with eight Oryon cores clocked up to 5GHz. Whether DirectX 12 driver support will extend to earlier chips like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 remains unclear.
