Samsung and Qualcomm Expand AI Partnership Beyond Phones

Qualcomm has named Samsung as a key partner in its personal AI ecosystem strategy, extending their relationship well beyond the smartphone chips that have anchored it for years. The partnership now spans smartwatches, XR headsets, and intelligent eyewear.

From Chipsets to an AI Ecosystem

The two companies outlined their broader vision at Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui. Qualcomm's SVP of XR, Wearables and Personal AI, Ziad Asghar, said Samsung plays a central role in expanding personal AI across device categories. The idea is that AI context should follow the user from phone to watch to glasses, rather than staying siloed on a single device.

On the hardware side, Qualcomm already supplies the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy that powers the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra. The Snapdragon Wear Elite platform runs the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.

Intelligent Eyewear With Google

The most notable expansion is in smart glasses. Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google are co-developing intelligent eyewear based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 platform. Qualcomm describes the AR1 and AR1+ as the first personal AI platforms supporting multi-model 1-bit inference, which would allow on-device AI processing in a glasses form factor without draining the battery in minutes.

The Samsung Galaxy Glasses are expected to be the first commercial product from this collaboration, though Samsung has not announced a release date.

What Personal AI Means in Practice

Qualcomm's personal AI vision positions the smartphone as the hub, with wearables acting as sensor-rich extensions. A watch tracks biometrics, glasses capture visual context, earbuds handle voice — and the phone's Galaxy AI engine processes it all. Whether that cross-device AI handoff works as seamlessly in practice as it does in keynote demos remains to be seen, but the hardware roadmap is now clearly aimed at it.
