A Shanghai-based startup called StepFun has beaten OpenAI and every major phone maker to a milestone: the first smartphone where an AI agent replaces the app grid as the primary interface. The StepX Neo runs Step AOS, a custom operating system rebuilt from Android, Linux, and RTOS components, with an AI agent called Step Amoo baked directly into the OS layer.

What "Agentic" Actually Means Here
The pitch is straightforward. Instead of opening individual apps to complete a task, you describe what you want in natural language, and the AI agent strings together the necessary steps across multiple services. Book a flight, arrange a ride to the airport, and set a reminder — all from a single request.
StepFun has built integrations with major Chinese platforms including Ctrip (travel), Alipay (payments), Didi (ride-hailing), Meituan (food and local services), WPS (office documents), and CapCut (video editing). The system uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard, which means the agent can freely combine system functions without being locked into a single app ecosystem.
Step Amoo reportedly handles core tasks fully offline — no constant network connection required. That distinction matters in a market where most AI phone features, including Samsung's Galaxy AI and Apple Intelligence, depend on cloud processing for anything beyond basic operations.
The Hardware
StepFun has not focused the conversation on specs, but what has surfaced points to a premium device: 5G connectivity, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. The phone features a dual-camera setup and an interactive secondary display on the rear panel — likely used for quick interactions without opening the device.
The company, founded in 2023 by former Microsoft employees, built its own large language model to power Step Amoo. That vertical integration — model, OS, and hardware designed together — is the same approach OpenAI is pursuing with its reported phone collaboration with Jony Ive, though OpenAI's device is not expected until the first half of 2027.
A Crowded Starting Line
StepFun is not the only company chasing this idea. Nubia announced its own AI agent smartphone at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, and Samsung has been layering agentic features into Galaxy AI with each One UI update. Google's Gemini on Pixel phones already handles multi-step tasks to a degree.
The difference is architectural. Those companies are adding AI layers on top of existing operating systems. StepFun rebuilt the OS itself around the agent paradigm. Whether that approach produces a meaningfully better user experience — or whether it just makes a phone that is confusing in new and different ways — is the question StepX Neo has to answer.
Availability and Pricing
StepFun has not confirmed global pricing or a specific launch date. The device is expected to target the premium segment in China first, with potential international availability to follow. Industry estimates place the price around $1,000 for the Chinese market.
The StepX Neo may or may not succeed as a product. But as a proof of concept — a phone where the interface is a conversation, not a grid of icons — it is the first hardware to ship what every major tech company has been demonstrating in keynotes for the past two years.
